Be the Captain of Your Mentor Ship

Do you have a mentor? Are you struggling to find one? Do you have any doubt that a mentor adds value to your professional growth? These questions (and many more) led us to talk through mentorship and what to look for in a mentor.

And, since we mention the “The 10 Commandments of Mentorship,” here they are:

  1. Don’t use the word ‘mentor’
  2. Don’t treat it like a transaction
  3. Show up prepared with questions
  4. Don’t boil the ocean in every meeting
  5. Ask your mentor to check your blind spots
  6. Look for themes and organizing principles
  7. Be honest and transparent
  8. Don’t give homework — focus on execution
  9. Make sure mentors are learning too
  10. Always have multiple mentors
